What it's like to live with a French Bulldog.
French Bulldogs are calm, affectionate, and built for family life. They don't need a yard, they don't need long runs, and they're famously content to nap on a couch beside you for hours. That makes them one of the best companion breeds for apartment dwellers, first-time dog owners, retirees, and families with young kids who want a dog that's gentle by default.
Frenchies bond hard with their people. They're sociable with strangers, generally great with other dogs, and they have personality. Every Frenchie we've raised has had a little signature quirk you'll learn within a week of bringing them home. They're not high-maintenance dogs, but they are high-attention dogs. If you're gone 10 hours a day, this isn't your breed.
What you should know going in: they overheat easily (brachycephalic = short snout), so summer walks happen in early morning or evening, and they're better indoor dogs than outdoor dogs. They snore. They snort. They're a little dramatic about everything. You'll love them for it.
What our Frenchies are like in real homes.
Lap-first by design
The breed was bred for companionship. If you're sitting, they're on you. If you're standing, they're following.
Patient with kids
Our Frenchies are raised around our own kids, which builds early tolerance and gentleness with children of all ages.
Apartment-perfect
Low exercise needs and quiet indoors make them one of the best urban breeds. We've placed dozens in NYC, Chicago, and DC apartments.
Heavy nappers
Expect 14 to 16 hours of sleep a day. Frenchies are bursts-of-energy dogs, not endurance dogs.
Honest health notes you should know.
French Bulldogs are brachycephalic, which means a flat face and a shortened airway. This is the breed's defining feature and also its main health consideration. Reputable breeders breed away from extreme features that worsen breathing. We do too. Our parent lines are selected for healthier airway conformation, not the most extreme look.
Common breed considerations we screen for: hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, brachycephalic airway syndrome, and allergies. Every WCP Frenchie pup leaves our home with a full vet check and the records to share with your vet.
Your part: keep them lean (Frenchies gain weight easily), avoid heat stress in summer, and never skip the 7-day vet check after pickup. That's how we both protect the pup.
